The first decade of the Minas Gerais international terminal was marked by the choice of the location for installation in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, an area that was later divided into two municipalities, giving the airport the unusual characteristic of being located in two cities: 63% in Confins and 37% in Lagoa Santa. The region was chosen because of its strategic location close to an expressway and because it offers safer weather and terrain conditions. The 1980s were also the period when the terminal was built, with 1,700 workers.

In its second decade, the airport began to be seen as a tourist attraction by the locals, who frequented the panoramic terrace and strolled through the terminal to try out new equipment at the time, such as escalators and elevators. It was also in the 1990s that the airport began to offer international destinations, with the first recurring route offered by LAB being Belo Horizonte - Santa Cruz De La Sierra (Bolivia). This was a period of economic growth in Brazil, which contributed to the increased demand for air travel.

A terceira década teve marcos importantes, como a chegada do centro de manutenção da GOL com mais de 145 mil metros quadrados divididos em três hangares. Em 2005, o terminal passou a receber 120 voos diários, o que representava um aumento de 85%, em relação ao início da operação. Nessa época também foi criada a Linha Verde, a via expressa que conecta o centro de Belo Horizonte ao aeroporto. Em 2012 a Infraero, que administrava 100% o aeroporto, iniciou a reforma no terminal 1 para atender a demanda da Copa do Mundo.

In 2014, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) signed the airport concession contract with the concessionaire BH Airport, formed by Motiva and Zurich Airport. The last decade has seen the construction of Passenger Terminal 2, which increased the airport's capacity to 32 million passengers per year. The runway was also expanded and the first phase of the renovation of Passenger Terminal 1 was completed. The period was also marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected the global aviation industry. Since 2022, the sector has seen a gradual recovery in passenger movement.

In 2024, BH Airport broke a record in terms of passenger numbers: 12.3 million, surpassing the national average and consolidating the overcoming of the pandemic period. The Minas Gerais international terminal also increased the number of destinations, reaching around 70, which makes it the second airport in Brazil in terms of domestic destinations and the third in total destinations. In terms of the commercial mix, the evolution is also evident: there are more than 100 operations, including retail, food and VIP lounges. The Multimodal Logistics Hub also had significant growth in imports and historic revenue. In 2024, the terminal received more than 30 thousand cargo import operations, an increase of 8% compared to the previous year.
